  • 2 Measure Cognac
  • 1 measure Cointreau
  • 1/2 measure Lemon Juice

Directions

Shake with ice and pour into a chilled cocktail glass with a powdered sugared rim.

Supposedly, the Sidecar was invented at the Ritz in Paris (although like most drinks, this story is contested and a bit murky) around the time of WWI. Apparently a regular patron of the bar was transported there via a motorcycle with a sidecar, and various versions of the story have the rider requesting something to warm him up after a cool ride, or the name being merely associated with “Mr. Sidecar” as he was the first consumer of the drink.

Regardless of history, this is a classic cocktail that “just works” when made properly. Unfortunately, many bars simple make a daiquiri with well brandy and sour mix, resulting in a horrible, artificial-tasting cocktail. When made with a decent cognac (or quality brandy) and fresh lemon juice, its true nature appears. I’ve tried variations ranging from this recipe, to equal parts cognac, Cointreau, and lemon juice, the latter being just a bit too tart for my taste.
